Steele and Associates are seeking candidates for an Environmental Specialist opportunity. This is a contract position located in Arden, NC. Local candidates will receive first consideration but all qualified candidates are welcomed. The position is slated to start March 16, 2015 with an estimated duration of one year.
This Environmental Specialist position provides comprehensive environmental, health or safety support to assigned geographic and/or organizational sections.
This position will be;
Responsible for moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health or safety disciplines to achieve compliance with the organization's EHS standards and with federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
Working under very general direction and independently determines and develops approaches to solutions. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.
Applying specialized technical expertise to develop, implement and maintain programs, systems and procedures.
Using experience to anticipate and prevent EHS incidents and hazards. Leading/conducting investigation of incidents, accidents, injuries, or complaints.
Recommending improvements in moderately complex processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.
Developing and conducting employee training, emergency preparedness and quality assurance programs.
Providing regulatory interpretation and technical advice.
Maintaining current knowledge of specific requirements imposed by government agencies and a working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of regulatory requirements and how they may impact company operations.
May act as a lead person or lead technical expert and provides direction to less experienced personnel working on environmental, health or safety programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
% of Time Performed Major responsibilities and specific job duties
50% Serve as single-points-of-contact or coordinators to implement environmental, health or safety activities that require broad knowledge and experience in order to provide compliance solutions to EHS issues. Provides direction for moderately complex work activities in order to comply with environmental, health or safety laws, regulations and corporate requirements. Develops, implements and recommends improvements in programs, systems and procedures. Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice. Leads/participates in and supports EHS compliance and management system audits.
35% Interacts with subject matter experts and customers to ensure consistent and thorough implementation of moderately complex EHS programs, policies, and procedures. Anticipates and prevents EHS incidents and hazards along with leads/conducts investigation of incidents, accidents, injuries or complaints.
15% Develops and conducts section and department administrative and development functions including budgeting, special projects and assignments, employee training, emergency preparedness and quality assurance programs.
REQUIRED
Qualifications:
Educational Background/Type of degree - Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, health, safety or other related field of study Years of prior work related experience in addition to a degree: plus 6 years of experience Years of prior equivalent work related experience in lieu of a degree : 10 years of directly related work experience

Job-specific knowledge, skills or abilities:
Broad knowledge of environmental and/or health & safety regulatory compliance requirements, scientific practices, quality assurance principles, auditing principles, and project management. Experience in negotiating with regulators.
Strong collaboration, communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management.
Demonstrated ability in developing and implementing moderately complex systems and processes that comply with environmental, health or safety laws and regulations, corporate policies and goals.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete each of them within specified timeframes.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in engineering, science, health, safety, other related technical field or business.
Five years experience in power generation or transmission/distribution operations. o Successful track record in supporting EH&S compliance at multiple facilities/regions within multiple regulatory jurisdictions.
Demonstrated ability to manage/lead personnel from diverse groups working toward a common objective or project.
Possess Professional Certification(s) (CSP, CIH, QEP, CHMM, PMP, etc.) or Registration (PE)

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
